Founded in 1957 by City maintenance workers Ed Mendonca and Tony Nunes, the band has grown into a cherished local tradition. In 1960, Tony Morelli took over as conductor, leading the 40-member professional ensemble until his passing in 1998. His daughter, Kathy Maier—formerly assistant conductor—has continued the legacy and led the band for more than 15 seasons.

Judge LaDoris Hazzard Cordell, the first African American woman to serve on the Superior Court of Santa Clara County (from 1988 to 2001), will deliver the keynote address at the City of Hayward’s 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration.
The annual Hearts of Hayward Volunteer Awards and Recognition Event will be streamed live on the City of Hayward YouTube channel starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 24.
Beat the Heat – Know Where to Go
When temperatures hit 100°F or higher, or remain at or above 95°F for three straight days, a public cooling center is a safe place to escape from extreme heat.
Extreme heat can cause heat stroke, exhaustion, and dehydration. It can also worsen allergies and breathing issues. Older adults, children, people with disabilities or medical conditions, and those without housing are at the highest risk.
This form authorizes the named individual to have access to one's Hangar/Storage/Tiedown.
On Thursday, June 22, 2023, the City of Hayward filed a lawsuit asking a judge to intervene to protect children at an Alameda County transitional center where foster children frequently go missing and are knowingly being exposed to and/or coerced into drug use, assaults and other forms of violence, sex trafficking and prostitution.
