What does it mean to become an Adopt-a-Block volunteer?
As an Adopt-a-Block volunteer you are able to "adopt" an area that you are committed to keeping litter and graffiti free for a period of two years. By keeping Hayward litter and graffiti free you are improving the appearance, property values, and attractiveness of our city. You will also be helping to reduce environmental pollution and prevent crime associated with an un-kept community.

What do volunteers do?
As a volunteer you will help keep your block clean but removing litter and graffiti and reporting weed control and blight issues.

How big is the adoption area?
The adoption area is a minimum of one block but larger areas are encouraged. You can check out our Adopt-a-Block Area Map for locations that are available for adoption.

Who picks up the litter after clean ups?
After your clean ups someone from our Maintenance Service team will come out to an agreed upon location to pick up the litter you collected.

Who provides the clean up supplies?
We do! We will provide gloves, vests, bags, grabbers, and graffiti removal tools.

Are Minors allowed to participate?
Absolutely! We encourage you to get your little ones and teens involved as long as they have proper adult supervision. There must be one adult for every five minors.

I heard that the City will put up an "adopt-a-block sign" if I enroll in the program, what does that mean?
After you have successfully completed two clean ups the City of Hayward will put an adopt-a-block sign on your adopted area letting everyone know that your group is responsible for how fabulous the area looks. The sign can have any name or phrase (with in reason) that represents your group.

What if I don't want a sign?
No problem! The sign is completely optional.

I have more questions! Who can help me?
