TEAMWORK - IT’S SAFER FOR OUR OFFICERS, SAFER FOR OUR COMMUNITY

Sometimes, you may see two, three, or more Hayward Police Officers responding to a call. It is not a reason to be alarmed but a tactic we use to maximize safety for our officers and our community.

Here’s a recent example of an officer duo who had a busy day. They recovered an illegally possessed gun and over a kilo of suspected methamphetamine.

Officers E. Gonzalez and Jiang worked together when they pulled a car over for an equipment violation. The driver and occupants inside were found to be unlicensed, so the vehicle was towed. During an inventory search of the car, a loaded handgun was found. The driver, a convicted felon, was arrested for various handgun charges.

A few hours later, the same officers did a security check at a hotel in South Hayward when they recognized a person they knew had outstanding warrants. Officers contacted the man and took him into custody. The man was searched following his arrest, and nearly three pounds of suspected methamphetamine was found, along with a large amount of currency and other contraband used to package and sell illegal drugs. The man was arrested for various drug-related charges.

Officers rarely go to calls for service by themselves as a matter of safety for the community and officers alike. On this day, Officers Gonzalez and Jiang we able to ride in the same patrol car. Luckily these two incidents ended peacefully and are a good reminder of why officers must respond to calls together.

So, when you see two or more officers at a traffic stop or on call for service, that’s normal. We are there to keep everyone safe and do our best to ensure a peaceful outcome.
