Call for student artwork: City of Hayward’s Annual Earth Day Poster & Writing Contest

January 25, 2022

The City of Hayward is now accepting environmentally-themed works of art from K-12 grade students as a part of its annual Earth Day Poster & Writing Contest. Interested participants can submit an original poster, poem, or essay about Earth Day for the chance to win up to $200 in gift cards.

The Contest gives students an opportunity to express their unique views on water and energy conservation, renewable energy, active transportation, sustainable food, recycling and composting, a litter-free environment, and environmental justice.

Two winners for poster entries and two winners for poem/essay entries will be selected from each grade category. The grade categories are: K-1st Grade, 2nd-3rd Grade, 4th-5th Grade, 6th-8th Grade, and 9th-12th Grade. Entries will be judged on originality, clarity, and expression of theme. In each category, first place winners will receive a $200 gift card and second place winners will receive a $150 gift card. Teachers of the winning students will also receive gift cards. Students who submit winning entries will be invited to attend a City Council meeting in April to receive their prize and a certificate of achievement from Mayor Barbara Halliday.

Poster & Writing Contest submissions are due Friday, March 18. To qualify, all entries must follow the Contest rules, which can be found at www.hayward-ca.gov/your-environment/get-involved/earth-day-events/poster-and-writing-contest.
