Reasonable Accommodations

A reasonable accommodation is a modification, aid, or service that helps a person with a disability fully participate in a public meeting. Accommodations are provided to ensure equal access and may include services such as sign language interpretation, translation, real-time captioning, accessible meeting materials, assistive listening devices, or other modifications appropriate to an individual's disability.

Requests for reasonable accommodation should be made as early as possible to allow the City time to arrange the requested service. The City will make every reasonable effort to provide effective accommodations in accordance with applicable federal and state laws.

To request an accommodation please email cityclerk@hayward-ca.gov at least 24 hours prior to the meeting start time.

Translation Services

The City of Hayward is committed to providing accessible City Council meetings for all community members. Live translation services are available for City Council meetings through Wordly, which provides real-time translation in both text and audio. Community members who wish to use translation services must contact the City Clerk's Office at least 24 hours before the start of the meeting so staff can ensure translation services are available.

Wordly supports more than 50 languages and allows participants to follow City Council meetings in the language of their choice.

Participants may access Wordly using their own smartphone, tablet, or other internet-connected device. No account or app download is required.

A limited number of loaner devices are available through the City Clerk's Office upon request. Please contact the City Clerk’s Office in advance if you need to borrow a device.

How to Access Translation Services

Contact the City Clerk's Office at least 24 hours before the start of the City Council meeting to request translation services.

No account registration or app download is required.

Select your preferred language from the drop-down menu and click Attend.

  1. Follow the Meeting

Real-time translated text will appear on your screen during the meeting. To listen to the translated audio, select the speaker icon and ensure your device's volume is turned on.
