Safe Streets Hayward

In tandem with our Safe Streets Downtown effort, the City of Hayward is developing roadway safety plans for several of our most high-injury streets in two phases:

Phase 1 – Learn more on the Phase 1 website: https://safestreetshayward.org

  • A Street from Hesperian Blvd to Watkins St
  • B Street from MLK Dr to Watkins St
  • Tennyson Road from Hesperian Blvd to Mission Blvd

Phase 2 – Learn more on the Phase 2 website: https://safestreetshayward.com/

  • Hesperian Boulevard from A St to Union City Blvd
  • Jackson Street from Santa Clara St to Mission Blvd
  • Mission Boulevard from Jackson St to Industrial Pkwy

These streets are all part of the City’s "High-Injury Network” (HIN)—a set of corridors and intersections where the most severe and fatal traffic crashes are concentrated.

The 2023 Local Road Safety Plan (LRSP) identifies the HIN, as well as Safe Systems Approach strategies to eliminate serious and fatal traffic collisions. In Hayward, just 14% of city streets where over 75% of serious and deadly crashes happen.

City staff pursued and won a federal grant to create plans for these roadways to significantly improve safety for all users.

Public input is a huge part of this design process, and incredibly helpful as we move to secure funding afterwards for construction. Please come out to our events, find us at pop-ups, and take online surveys available in English and Spanish as we move through several rounds of outreach for each phase.
