PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The Campus Drive Traffic Calming Project spans 0.78 miles of Campus Drive between 2nd Street and Hayward Boulevard. The area is served by multiple neighborhoods, California State University East Bay, hiking trails, churches, senior facility, and Fire Station 9. Hayward identified Campus Drive as a priority corridor for traffic calming improvements based on community concerns, traffic volume, speed and collision data, and other factors. The purpose of the project is to identify pedestrian, bicycle, and traffic calming improvements to address traffic safety concerns and mobility needs in the corridor that are supported by the community.
Sidewalk Improvement
The project will provide a sidewalk route from 2nd Street to University Court on Campus Drive and builds on improvements initiated in February 2023, which included striping upgrades with bike lanes and bollards along Campus Drive from 2nd Street to Highland Boulevard.
Sidewalk improvement will cover approximately 2,700 linear feet split between either side of the roadway and includes the following improvements along Campus Drive:
- Installing a 4.5-foot sidewalk on the East side of Campus Drive from near 2nd Street to Oakes Drive
- Installing Curb ramps at the intersection of Campus Drive with Oakes Drive
- Installing a 4.5-foot sidewalk on the West side of Campus Drive from Oakes Drive to University Court
- New Stormwater Treatment Area on east side of Campus Dr at University Court.
These improvements build on the goals of the Campus Drive Traffic Calming Project, which aimed to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance safety for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders. By providing a sidewalk connection, protected bike lanes, and consistent roadway features, these measures will create a safer, more accessible, and more efficient environment for everyone.
