Arsonist in Russell City

RUSSELL CITY-An arsonist early this morning managed to reduce the number of rooms in the Russell City Hotel by two after setting a fire under the back stairs.

The Alameda County Fire Patrol put the damage to the structure at $1,000. The fire was started around 3 a.m. this morning and was spotted by a neighbor who called it in.

The hotel at 2247 W. Winton Ave. is occupied by Cicero Smith. There were no injuries.

RUSSELL CITY — The Alameda County Fire Patrol is getting the idea that either someone doesn't like them or is trying to clear Russell City of all the vacant houses.

The fire patrol answered an other call last night in Russell City and found another vacant house almost completely destroyed by fire before the firefighters arrived.

The firemen have responded to 20 fires in Russell City since the first of the year and five of them have occurred since April 12.

Extension Granted for Hog Ranchers

The Santucci Bros. have been granted a two-week extension on their April 18 deadline for removing their hog farm operation from the Russell City Redevelopment project.

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors granted an extension to April 30 when the hog farm operators pleaded that rains have delayed completion of their new farm near Brentwood in Contra Costa county. They will continue to pay rent to the county on the Russell City properly during the extension interval.

The Alameda county Health department this week had four men checking the Russell City garbage disposal problem, advising families on disposal of garbage by one of three methods.

The men have suggested having the garbage dumped at the Russell City "sanitary?" dumping grounds, picked up by a paid contractor, or buried within the property itself.

Mrs. Ruth Manwarren, Russell City resident, took the bit in her teeth this morning to reply to Peter Gulbrandsen, who branded Russell City as one of the worst shanty towns in the nation in a signed article in the Daily Pacific Builder, publication for the construction industries, last week.

Harry Bartell, chairman of the counly board of supervisors, yesterday answered a letter from the Eden Council for Civic Unity.

In answer to one of the three questions asked by the council, Bartell said, "No plans have ever been proposed to bring water to Russell City."
