Earth Month Highlights: Hayward awards 19 young creators and hosts community clean-up event
Last month, Hayward hosted its annual Earth Day celebration featuring the 2023 Poster & Writing Contest and 40th Annual Clean-Up and Community Fair.
On April 18th, Mayor Mark Salinas and Council members honored nineteen local students as the winners of the 2023 Earth Day Poster and Writing Contest. The Poster & Writing Contest is an important part of the City’s Earth Day festivities, providing Hayward students an opportunity to express their unique perspectives on topics including environmental justice, resource conservation, and recycling. This year, more than 600 art and writing entries were submitted by students across 33 Hayward schools. To see the list of winners and the winning entries, click here.
The awards ceremony was followed by the City’s Annual Cleanup Day and Community Fair on Saturday, April 22nd, where over 200 community members gathered to pick up litter from City streets in and around Weekes Park. The event was hosted in partnership with the Keep Hayward Clean & Green Task Force, which hosts quarterly cleanup events year-round. Following the clean-up, City staff were joined by community organizations including East Bay Community Energy, Hayward Promise Neighborhood, and many others in hosting sustainability-themed booths for the Community Fair.
