Fourth of July reminder: All fireworks are illegal in Hayward
The Stack Extra
With the Fourth of July holiday this Friday, the City of Hayward encourages residents to be a good neighbor, celebrate safely and follow the City’s fireworks ban: All forms of fireworks are illegal in Hayward. People caught using fireworks are subject to criminal citation and owners of property where illegal fireworks activity takes place are subject to fines.
The ban is in place to reduce the risk of injury and fire as well as to be considerate of the impact of explosions on people with certain health conditions (including post-traumatic stress disorder), household animals and other vulnerable populations.
Under an ordinance that took effect in 2022, owners of properties where fireworks activity takes place or emanates from can be cited and face progressively increasing fines of $1,500, $3,000 and $5,000 for a first, second and third offense, respectively.
These civil nuisance ordinance citations can be issued if fireworks activity is witnessed by police, City code enforcement staff or other personnel or reported by a member of the public and confirmed by the City.
