Request inspection, trimming, root pruning, removal of a public tree
Residents may request to have tree roots pruned along the edge of the sidewalk if it appears that the roots of a street tree are damaging the sidewalk, curb, or gutter. Root pruning may reduce the potential for future sidewalk damage. Pruning can be scheduled for public street trees at no charge to the property owner by calling Landscape Maintenance at 510.583.8906 or submitting an online request through Access Hayward. Root pruning begins in spring and ends in the fall due to weather conditions. Prior to pruning the tree roots, Landscape Maintenance staff will complete an inspection of the location and tree to determine if the tree is a good candidate for being pruned, or must be removed.
Tree trimming in the City is completed on a regular schedule based on urban forestry best practices. Businesses and residents can request non-emergency tree-trimming services by calling Landscape Maintenance at 510.583.8906 or submitting an online request through Access Hayward.
Emergency tree-trimming to remove branches from power lines is only completed by Pacific Gas & Electric Company contractors. For emergency tree-trimming services, call 800.743.5000.
Upon request, Landscape Maintenance will remove trees that impede the completion of sewer line repairs, have multiple issues that cannot be corrected by trimming or root pruning, or are an imminent hazard to the public. In all tree removal cases, the City will evaluate the tree and work to find alternatives to removal before removing the tree. If workable alternatives exist and the resident still wants the tree removed, the removal must be done at the resident's expense. Request tree removal by calling Landscape Maintenance at 510.583.8906 or submitting an online request through Access Hayward.
