Hayward residents still have time to take advantage of valuable federal tax credits for clean energy upgrades — but deadlines are quickly approaching. These tax credits can save you thousands on electric vehicles, home energy improvements, and clean power systems, while lowering your utility bills and reducing carbon emissions.

Tax Credits for Electric Vehicles and Chargers

Thinking about switching to an electric vehicle (EV)? Now is the perfect time. Federal tax credits of up to $7,500 for new EVs and up to $4,000 for used EVs are only available through September 30, 2025. Best of all, the savings apply at the time of purchase for qualifying vehicles and income-eligible buyers — meaning you don’t have to wait until tax season to benefit.

Need a charger, too? You can claim up to $1,000 toward the cost of purchasing and installing a home or workplace charging station. Eligible expenses may include charging equipment, professional installation, and even panel upgrades if needed. But time is limited: this federal tax credit is only available through June 30, 2026.

If you are considering an EV and/or charger, visit Plug In America’s EV tax credit guide to see which vehicles qualify and whether you’re eligible.

Residential Clean Energy Credits

Have you been on the fence about installing rooftop solar, a battery storage, or a geothermal heat pump? Now is the time to act. Federal credits allow you to claim 30% of the total project cost if you purchase and install by December 31, 2025.

Energy Efficient Home Upgrade Credits

Upgrading your home is one of the smartest investments you can make — for your comfort, your wallet, and the environment. Until December 31, 2025, you can take advantage of tax credits that reduce the cost of modern, efficient technologies, including:

  • Heat pump systems — up to $2,000 in credits for energy-efficient heating and cooling
  • Heat pump water heaters — up to $2,000
  • Insulation, air sealing, and weatherization — up to $1,200
  • Electrical panel upgrades — up to $600 to support electric appliances and EV chargers
  • Home energy audits — up to $150 to help identify where you can save the most on energy costs

These upgrades can lower monthly utility bills, improve indoor comfort, and shrink your carbon footprint — but the credits won’t last forever.
