16-Year-Old Student Arrested for Shooting Near Mt. Eden High School

HAYWARD, Calif., September 3, 2021 — On Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, at about 9:00 AM, officers responded to the 27000 block of Coronado St regarding the report of a shooting that just occurred. A witness said they saw what appeared to be a high-school aged student fire a gun at a moving vehicle before fleeing the area on foot, possibly toward Mt. Eden High School.

Officers arrived on scene and confirmed a shooting had taken place. Due to the proximity of the incident to Mt. Eden High School and the direction of flight it was believed the suspect took, school staff were notified and were given a description of the subject. As the investigation continued, a second witness advised they saw the suspected shooter walk onto the Mt. Eden High School campus.

This information was relayed to school staff and investigating officers, who had already responded to the school. A search for the suspected shooter took place and he was subsequently located and taken into custody without incident. A firearm was also recovered during the investigation. The subject was identified as a 16-year-old Mt. Eden High School student.

The Hayward Police Department is dedicated to providing safety to our community and we understand the fear associated with these types of incidents. Though this incident was resolved and poses no additional safety threat, officers have been assigned to conduct extra patrols near Mt. Eden High School and the surrounding neighborhood.

We also want to thank the community for their observations and cooperation, which assisted with the ultimate arrest of an armed subject, as well as the confiscation of a firearm.
