Hayward now accepting applications for no-cost programs to reduce wildfire risk
The Stack | May 2025
In an ongoing effort to reduce wildfire risk in high-hazard areas, the Hayward Fire Department is accepting applications for its annual No-Cost Residential Chipping Program and associated Residential Assistance Program taking place June 2 to July 1 or until funding is depleted.
The No-Cost Residential Chipping Program provides free chipping services to residents living in the Hayward Hills and Fairview Fire Protection District. It aims to help property owners create defensible space by removing dry vegetation and tree limbs near their homes.
Services are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Under the program, residents are responsible for cutting, gathering and stacking branches at the front of their property prior to their appointment. On the scheduled day, a contractor hired by the City will perform the chipping on the street.
Eligible properties are residences east of Mission Boulevard, south of D Street and up to the border of Union City. This area is identified as a high wildfire hazard zone because of its proximity to open spaces heavily covered in brush and grass. To participate, residents must complete the 2025 Chipping Application. After submitting, applicants will receive an email confirming their acceptance into the program.
In addition to the chipping service, the City offers financial support through its Residential Assistance Program (RAP). The RAP is designed to help seniors, disabled individuals and low-income residents with the costs of cutting, trimming and stacking vegetation for chipping. Those interested in assistance should email FiresafeHFD@hayward-ca.gov with their full name, address and contact information to receive an application.
