Hayward waste services modified due to COVID-19

May 26, 2020

Update: All Waste Management Alameda County (WMAC) and Tri-CED Community Recycling waste collection services will resume in Hayward on June 1.

Due to shelter in place restrictions during the COVID-19 health emergency, solid waste services across Hayward have been modified in order to protect the health of workers while maintaining vital waste services.

Bulky Item Pickups - Bulky pickup and excess waste pick up programs in Hayward have been temporarily suspended, but will resume on June 1.* Residents may also self-haul waste to the Davis Street Transfer Station. Each Hayward household is eligible to receive one coupon per year for free drop-off of up to two cubic yards of waste. Visit Hayward’s bulky item pickup webpage for more information.

Household Hazardous Waste - Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Facilities in Oakland, Livermore, and Hayward are currently closed. The Fremont location remains open with limited hours of operation, however, it is recommended that residents postpone trips to the facility unless absolutely essential. Please safely store household hazardous waste until the shelter-in-place ordinance has been lifted. For more information on the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste program, visit the program’s website.

Unwanted and Expired Medicine, Inhalers, and Sharps - Alameda County Residents can safely dispose of their unwanted or expired medicine, inhalers, and/or sharps for free by mail. Visit the Med-Project.org or call 1 (844) 633-7765 to learn more about the mail-back disposal program and to request mail-back services.

Curbside Collection - There will be no interruptions to normal curbside organics, recycling, and landfill collection services. Waste Management will continue to collect organics and landfill material while Tri-CED Community Recycling will continue to collect recycling. Tri-CED Community Recycling temporarily suspended the collection of items placed outside of carts such as oil jugs, filters, battery bags, and extra cardboard. This service will resume June 1.*

Waste Management’s walk-in office is currently closed. For questions regarding Waste Management services, visit www.wm.com/alerts, call customer support at (510) 537-5500, or email csnorthbay@wm.com. For questions regarding Tri-CED Community Recycling services, visit www.Tri-CED.org.

*5/27/20 update: Article updated to reflect that bulky curbside pickup will resume on June 1, as will Tri-CED collection of items placed outside of carts.
