B Street in Downtown Hayward

Safe Streets is a City of Hayward initiative to transform streets with the highest rates of serious-injury and fatal collisions to make them safer for everyone—drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Last month, as part of this project, we invited community members to follow along and provide input on Safe Streets’ plans to make the Downtown Loop safer and more accessible.

Over the next few weeks, we are inviting additional participation and feedback on Safe Streets’ improvement plans for three additional high-traffic corridors: A Street between Hesperian and Mission boulevards, B Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Mission Boulevard, and Tennyson Road between Hesperian and Mission boulevards.

These initial rounds of Safe Streets planning will help form a set of potential upgrades for the roadways involved by fall 2025—eventually, the City will create Safe Streets conceptual plans to compete for transportation funding grants to carry out the work.

Ultimately, the goal of Safe Streets is Vision Zero, or the elimination of all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries in Hayward.
