Homicide Update

HAYWARD, Calif., On Monday, June 13, 2022, at about 8:30 AM, Hayward PD officers responded to the report of an assault with a deadly weapon near the 27000 block of Whitman St.

Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Robert Saffold, of Hayward.

The suspect, 38-year-old Steven Velasquez, of Hayward, was located and taken into custody at the scene.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Velasquez with homicide, and he remains in custody at this time.

There are no outstanding suspects or danger to the community related to this incident. The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Due to the proximity of the shooting to Tennyson High School, a lockdown was put into effect and was lifted after it was determined there was no longer a threat to the community.
