Hayward invites public participation as it kicks off updates to key housing and environmental plans

January 20, 2022

HAYWARD, Calif., Jan. 24, 2022— The City of Hayward is updating important local government policy documents in 2022—among them the Housing Element of the General Plan and the Climate Action Plan—and is seeking community input as part of the process.

The Housing Element of the General Plan identifies the City’s housing conditions and needs, establishes goals, objectives and policies that are the foundation of the City’s housing strategy, and provides direction for an array of programs for meeting identified needs.

The Climate Action Plan sets goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental objectives, and provides a roadmap for meeting them.

In addition, the City will simultaneously update a component of the Hayward General Plan called the Hazards Element—the purpose of which is to minimize risk, damage and injury resulting from environmental hazards, both natural and human-made.

And the City will add a new Environmental Justice Element to its General Plan—the aim of which is fair treatment and meaningful involvement of people of all races, cultures and incomes in the development and implementation of local environmental laws and policy.
