Hog Farm Irks Developers

Oakland Tribune, Apr. 18, 1969

The prestigious firm of Cabot, Cabot and Forbes Hayward Properties, Inc., is paying some $2.5 million for 200 acres of county redevelopment land in old Russell City.

But they're upset over an adjoining hog slop depot in plain view of the tract. They told the Board of Supervisors so yesterday.

"Awful," said Supervisor Leland W. Sweeney.

"Terrible," said Supervisor Emanuel Razeto, "the whole purpose of the Russell City Redevelopment project was to destroy the slums — and now we're recreating the same thing."

Seems that the Santucci brothers, who used to own the Santucci Brothers Hog Farm in Russell City, sold off part of their land to the county but reserved 36 acres to use as a central hog fueling station for their new hog farm which is now in Brentwood.

Santucci trucks gather the slop from all over the place in small trucks and then take it to what the county planning staff euphemistically calls the "elevated waste foods trans-shipment facility."

There, the small trucks pump their swill into one large tanker truck and the tanker takes off for Brentwood.

This occurs daily, said the distinguished representative from Cabot, Cabot and Forbes, and one day representatives from a major food industry were about to select a building site when they spotted the action on the elevated waste foods trans-shipment facility.

"We lost 'em," said the Cabot man.

"Yessir, brother — I'm leaving, is what I would say," said Sweeney.

"All we want," said the Cabot man, "is that the conditional permit under which Santucci operates be reviewed every year instead of five years as is now provided."

Razeto and Sweeney voted for a one year review but they lost 3-2. The board then voted for a two year review with Razeto and Sweeney dissenting.

When it was all over, the attorney for Santucci promised that the hog slop operation would be beautified with some greenery over the next two years.

They shook hands on it.
