Gail Steele Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient: William Vandenburgh

William Vandenburgh

The Gail Steele Lifetime Achievement Award is an honor to bestow to a member of the community that has dedicated their life to volunteer service and to the overall good of humanity. This year's recipient William Vandenburgh served the Hayward community for many years, by being civically involved and contributing a lifetime of work to the many causes he believes in.

Bill worked as a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at California State University, East Bay, until becoming an Executive Dean for the University. Upon retiring Bill became a Professor Emeritus for the University. In addition to teaching, Bill was the school's first Athletic Director, Chair of the Physical Education Department and team coach. Bill coached the school's first men's basketball team in 1961 and would continue in that capacity until 1966. Challenged with low funds and limited eligible players, Bill would gather players from all over to play for the first basketball team at California State University of Hayward. Not only did Bill bring athletics to the school, but he provided an opportunity to numerous students to earn college degrees, otherwise thought unobtainable. In recognition of his contributions to the University's athletic program, Bill was inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.

In 1968, Bill joined a group of dedicated volunteers committed to expanding housing opportunities for disadvantaged communities and established Eden Housing. For 45 years Bill has been an active and committed member on the Eden Housing Board of Directors, serving in a variety of positions, including President from 1984 to 2000. During his tenure, Eden Housing had developed or acquired 7,267 units of affordable housing for low income people in 95 properties in 10 counties throughout California. Eden Housing also expanded in the City of Hayward developing or acquiring 26 affordable housing communities with 1,396 apartment units for lower-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities, while Bill served on the Board.

Bill's dedication to the community was well represented as he served on numerous boards and commissions. From 1967 to 1970, Bill served on the Hayward Low-Rent Housing Steering Committee. In 1969, Bill served as Chair to the Ohlone Community College Site Selection Committee. From 1968 to 1970 he served on the Boy Scouts of America, San Francisco Bay Area Council. He was a member of the United Way, Bay Area Board of Directors from 1985 to 1989 and the Election Committee from 1985 to 1988. Bill was a member on the Hayward Boy's Club Board of Directors from 1971 to 1977, including serving as Vice President in 1976. In 1981, he served on the Alameda County Civil Grand Jury. Bill also served on the Eden Youth and Family Center Board of Directors in a variety of capacities from 1978 to 1988. John N. Pappas Humanitarian Award Recipient: Freddye Davis

Freddye Davis

Freddye Davis was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. At an early age, Freddye became civically engaged in the Civil Rights movement and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and even marched and demonstrated with Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1967, Freddye received her nursing degree, and would work for 25 years in numerous medical facilities, in addition to 16 years at Santa Rita Jail.

After traveling the world with her husband, as he served in the United States military, Freddye and Alphonza moved to California in 1967. Once settling in Hayward, Freddye became an active member of the Hayward South Alameda County branch of the NAACP. She served as Branch Secretary until 2001, when she became President of the branch, which she continues to serve today. As a constant advocate against racism Freddye chaired multiple events, including the Hate Crimes for California State Conference. Freddye also worked at the state-level for the NAACP serving as 2nd Vice President of the California State Conference.

Based on her continual outreach to uplift the community, Freddye established Reality Mentor, Inc. in 2005. Reality Mentor, Inc. is a mentoring program for at-risk youth and low income families, to learn from professional leaders about ways to define and achieve personal, educational and professional goals. With several years of experience within the local and statewide community, Freddye became aware that many youth lacked the personal and professional skills to adequately evaluate, pursue and attain positions of employment. She understood that this deficit in skills also contributed to an inability to pursue career guidance. Through Freddye's leadership, she hopes to provide a brighter path for students throughout Alameda County.

In 2006, Freddye was selected as one of the Women of the Year, by the California State Legislature, as well as inducted into the Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame. Freddye was chosen to be in the Women’s Hall of Fame based on her work to continue Dr. King's legacy, to build a community on the foundation of freedom, equality and respect.

Freddye continues to be a community advocate and a member of the Palma Ceia Baptist Church since 1972. She is also the Vice Queen Mother of the Red Hat Divas, a chapter of the Red Hat Society which connects and supports women internationally.
