Pilot safely crash lands on departure from Hayward Executive Airport

HAYWARD, Calif., Oct. 21, 2020—The pilot of a home-built plane safely crash landed today on the grounds of the former Skywest Golf Course after reporting engine trouble on a departure from adjacent Hayward Executive Airport.

The pilot, whose name is not being released by the City of Hayward, survived the crash landing that otherwise destroyed the single-engine, four-seat aircraft.  The pilot did not appear to be seriously hurt and was transported to an area hospital.  No passengers were on board.

The incident, which took place at approximately 11:45 a.m. today, is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.  The NTSB investigates all civil aviation accidents in the United States and other major accidents in other modes of transportation.

The golf course, formerly run by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, is no longer in operation and was not in use at the time at the time of the crash.

The airport remained open after the incident.
