Mayor Barbara Halliday receiving the Beacon Award

Hayward was one of only four cities in California honored with the Beacon Award in 2015. Mayor Halliday received the award during the League of Cities Conference in San Jose on October 1, 2015. The Beacon Award is a program of the Institute for Local Government (ILG) to recognize local jurisdictions for their efforts to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, save energy and adopt policies and programs that promote sustainability.

The City of Hayward has reduced municipal GHG emissions by 43%, by far the highest among all award recipients. To read about how the City has achieved these reductions, visit the City’s website (Green Your Government: Greenhouse Gas Reductions).

In addition to the Beacon Award, the ILG also presented Spotlight Awards, which are for accomplishing individual elements of the full Beacon Award criteria. Hayward received five Spotlight Awards for the following achievements:

  • Municipal GHG Reductions: Platinum Level
