Hayward is accepting applications for its spring Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes.

Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, volunteers will be prepared to assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available.

Skills to be taught include:

  • Disaster awareness and preparedness
  • Disaster psychology
  • Hazardous materials awareness
  • Light search and rescue
  • Small unit leadership
  • Response team management
  • Fire suppression and utilities control
  • Disaster medical operations
  • Terrorism awareness

The courses are free of charge and the only related cost may be upgrading your disaster supply kit at home.  No special skills are required—just the willingness to learn the skills necessary to survive and help others survive a disaster.

The courses are scheduled once a week for five consecutive weeks starting April 1.  Space is limited and classes fill rapidly.  Registration is handled electronically only through the CERT page on the City of Hayward website.
