Week #3 for Recruit Class 2016-1

Tara Reyes | April 13, 2016

Recruit Academy 16-1 just completed six days of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Training with the City’s EMS Coordinator.  During this module, the recruits learned about EMS-related protocols and procedures within Alameda County.  After successfully passing an exam on pharmacology and dysrhythmia, the recruits spent an afternoon learning how to use the EMS Reporting System, otherwise known as ePCR.  Over the balance of the week, the recruits spent the majority of their time practicing manipulative skills while utilizing EMS equipment; skill sets were practiced in the areas of pediatric and cardiac/respiratory emergencies while utilizing the Life Pack 15 EKG, Lucas Devices, new intubation cameras, intravenous lines, and understanding proper drug dosages.

In addition, the recruits spent a morning learning about the new fitness testing program developed by members of the Hayward Fire Department’s Fitness Committee.  As test subjects for this new program, the recruits were put through a series of exercises measuring their strength and flexibility, all while learning about the importance of maintaining proper nutrition, rest, strength and flexibility throughout the Academy.
