Water efficient landscape

As summer temperatures rise and outdoor water use increases, adopting wise water habits is especially important. Typically, a large portion of water use during warmer months is related to irrigating lawns and gardens. A few small changes to your outdoor water use habits can make a significant difference in water savings, while still maintaining a healthy landscape. Here are a few water saving measures that can lower your costs and substantially improve water use efficiency:

  1. Water early in the morning or late at night, usually between 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to limit evaporation.
  2. Choose water-saving plants such as native plants and succulents that need less water and thrive during summer months.
  3. Apply mulch around shrubs and trees to help retain moisture, reduce runoff, moderate soil temperature, and help with weed control.
  4. Fix leaks promptly, and inspect your irrigation system for broken sprinkler heads, lines, and overly damp areas.
  5. Use a broom instead of hosing down patios and driveways.

The City of Hayward is committed to making conservation a way of life and offers a variety of rebates and programs to support your water-saving efforts:

  • Lawn Conversion Rebate: pre-approved customers can receive up to $1.50 per square foot of lawn converted to water-efficient landscaping.
  • Rain Barrel Rebate: receive up to $50 per rain barrel to collect rainwater from hard surfaces such as rooftops and store it for later use.
  • Smart Irrigation Controller: receive a smart irrigation controller at a reduced price that can lower outdoor water use by up to 50%.
