Downtown closure of B and Main streets to expand outdoor dining, encourage shopping
HAYWARD, Calif., June 25, 2020—The City of Hayward will close the heart of the Downtown District to vehicular traffic the afternoon and evening of Saturday, June 27, to expand space for outdoor dining and encourage downtown shopping.
The event area will include B Street from Foothill to Watkins Street and Main Street from A to C streets, and is scheduled to take place from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Vehicles will be cleared from the enclosure area starting at 2 p.m.
On June 19, the Alameda County Health Officer amended the county COVID-19 shelter-in-place order to allow for reopening of all retail stores and outdoor dining.
The street closures will allow restaurants to pull tables out onto sidewalks and street areas in front of their businesses, providing expanded areas intended to help restaurants meet county and state distancing and other safety protocols, including the wearing of masks or other face coverings.
The event is being carried out as a pilot program in cooperation with downtown businesses and business associations, and is tentatively scheduled to repeated again on Saturday, July 11.
