Electrify Everything
In 2021, transportation and natural gas consumption accounted for 84% of Hayward's total greenhouse gas emissions. Hayward residents can cut costs and significantly reduce their greenhouse gas footprint by replacing their fossil fuel powered home appliances and modes of transportation with all-electric alternatives!
Ava Community Energy's Carbon-Free Electricity
The majority of Hayward residents receive 100% carbon-free electricity from Ava Community Energy (formerly East Bay Community Energy). This means that all the electricity used by Ava customers is climate-friendly, emitting zero greenhouse gas emissions. By electrifying everything, residents can take full advantage of Ava's clean energy.
Electrify Your Home
Homes in Hayward emit greenhouse gas emission when they burn natural gas for heating water, air conditioning, and while cooking with a gas-powered stove. Hayward residents can replace each of these appliances with high efficiency, all-electric alternatives. For only a while longer, residents can access BayREN's Home+ Program for rebates on electric appliances to make the switch even easier. BayREN Home+ program is expected to sunset by October 31st, 2024, or until the budget is exhausted, whichever comes first. You can find the latest budget updates here and/or visit BayREN's news page to read the most up-to-date information about the program. Heat Pump Water Heaters - Heat pump water heaters (HPWH) are water heaters that, unlike gas-powered water heaters and electric resistance water heaters, heat water by transferring heat from the surrounding air rather than creating new heat. This allows HPWHs to be 3-4x more efficient than gas and electric resistance water heaters.
Induction Cooktops - Induction cooktops use magnets and electric currents to create heat for cooking Induction cooking is cleaner, quicker, and safer than cooking with gas or coil-electric resistance stoves.
Air-Sourced Heat Pumps - Like a HPWH, air-sourced heat pumps provide efficient heating and cooling to your home by transferring heat rather than creating it. Air-sourced heat pumps commonly deliver 1.5 - 3 times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes.
Electric Pump Dryers - A heat pump dryer can reduce energy use by at least 28% compared to standard dryers and is gentler on your clothes.
Drive an Electric Vehicle
A plug-in electric vehicle (EV) operates on electricity from an on-board battery rather than burning gasoline. EVs produce zero emissions and cost only a fraction to maintain and operate that gas-powered vehicles require. Hayward residents have access to a wide range of rebates and incentive programs to make purchasing or leasing and charging an EV convenient and affordable. Check out our Electric Vehicle Resources page for more info.
