East Bay Greenway
Update: At the January 27, 2026 City Council meeting, the City approved the project scoping, which allows the project to commence environmental review

The East Bay Greenway is a planned regional trail which would link BART stations throughout the inner East Bay. The Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC) is leading the project, which proposes to construct a bicycle and pedestrian facility that will generally follow the BART alignment for a distance of 16 miles and traverse the cities of Oakland, San Leandro, and Hayward as well as the unincorporated communities of Ashland and Cherryland. The Project will connect seven BART stations as well as downtown areas, schools, and other major destinations.
The goals of the project are:
- Improve safety for all roadway users
- Connect pedestrians and bicyclists to public transportation, jobs, shopping, and recreation destinations
- Create a facility that welcomes bicyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities
- Create beautiful places that foster civic pride and enable healthy recreation
The City of Hayward has partnered with Alameda CTC to develop recommendations for the Hayward segment of the East Bay Greenway. These recommendations are summarized below and will continue to be refined during the environmental phase.
