Hayward Honors Women 2015

March 10, 2015

(HAYWARD, CA) – On Thursday, March 26, the City of Hayward will put an exciting new spin on its third “Hayward Honors Women” event, assembling a program that celebrates the rich history of American women while examining new frontiers in gender equality through the eyes of four exceptional Hayward women.

The highlight of the event, founded as a teach-in by former Hayward City Councilmember Mark Salinas in 2012, will be a panel discussion moderated by Janet Reilly, host of “The Mix,” a popular news magazine show on NBC Bay Area. Reilly also brings Hayward ties to the program, having served as the director of public relations for Mervyns department stores earlier in her career.

After a one-year hiatus, the event has been revived with a quartet of accomplished Hayward women representing different generations, different backgrounds and different professions. Each will offer her own unique perspective on historic women’s issues while examining the current challenges women face and issues still on the horizon.

Panelists include Gail Steele, former Hayward City Councilmember and Alameda County Supervisor; Cecily Joseph, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility and Chief Diversity Officer for Symantec Corporation; Farima Pour-Khorshid, a third-year Ph.D. student and part-time kindergarten bilingual teacher; and Ana Rangel, a recent UC Berkeley graduate and former participant in outreach programs such as Puente and Upward Bound.

“We’ve assembled a truly remarkable group of Hayward women for this year’s event,” said Mayor Barbara Halliday. “They reflect the city’s unparalleled diversity, and each one of them brings a completely different, incredibly valuable voice to the discussion. This should be an interesting and engaging event that will appeal to individuals of all ages.”

Admission to the event is free and networking among guests will be encouraged following the panel discussion and Q&A session. Light refreshments will be provided.
