Literacy Plus' philosophy is to help break the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy in the Hayward community for adults and children. The program promotes reading and writing competency, provides a computer learning lab, recruits and trains volunteer tutors, supports community outreach and obtains general and financial resources as needed.
English Conversation Circles: English Conversation Circles provide speaking opportunities to adults whose native language is not English. The goals is to ensure learners strengthen their conversational skills and build self-esteem. The circles are held at several locations in Hayward.
Career Online High School: Hayward Public Library's Literacy Plus program, in partnership with the California State Library and Gale, part of Cengage Learning, offers adults the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certificate.
Adult Literacy Tutoring: Free, one-on-one tutoring for adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Trained volunteers provide tutoring at the Main Library, Weekes Branch Library or other public sites in Hayward.
Become a Volunteer: Literacy is the key to independence, self-sufficiency, and pride. Help empower someone by providing them with the tools they need. A few hours a week can change someone's life - and your life, too.
