Borrowing Materials

Borrow books, music, movies, computers - even vegetable and flower seeds! We offer a wide range of materials for all ages.

How many items can I check out?

If you have a regular library card: There is no limit to the number of books you can check out. Please borrow as many books as you need. There is no limit on most other formats, except DVDs. You may borrow up to twenty (20) DVDs at one time.

If you have a provisional library card: Provisional cards holders may borrow one (1) item at a time

How long can I borrow books, DVDs and other items? All books, DVDs, and other format items are loaned for 21 days. Items may be renewed for an additional 21 days. Renewal may be requested online or at the library. Renewals may be denied if an item is overdue, or if another patron has placed a request for the item, or if the item has already been renewed twice.

How do I renew my items? You may request renewal by bringing your items to a library checkout desk, or online in My Library Account. Renewal requests may be denied if an item is overdue, if another patron has placed a request for the item, or if the item has already been renewed twice.

Do I have to return library materials to the same Library where I checked them out? Hayward Public Library materials may be returned to either the Main Library or Weekes Branch. Hayward Public Library books that were borrowed from our school-based homework centers may be returned at their host schools.

How do I borrow seeds for my garden? Visit our Seed Lending Library page for more information about borrowing seeds.

What are the rules for borrowing Chromebooks? Chromebooks (small, web-based laptop computers) are available for use inside the library for up to four (4) hours per day. Chromebooks cannot be taken out of the building.

Can I borrow items that aren't available in Hayward? Yes! LINK+ allows you to borrow materials not available at the Hayward Public Library from other libraries. LINK+ books are checked out for 21 days and may be renewed for an additional 14 days if no one else requestedthe book. Some media is also available through LINK+ for a 7-day or21-day loan period with no renewals. The overdue fine for LINK+ items is $1 per day per item. For LINK+ items not returned or damaged, you maybe charged up to $115.00

To place a LINK+ request, simply search for an item in the Library Catalog, then click on the Search Other Libraries button.
