What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is an attempt by one partner to gain power and maintain control over the other partner. Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, ethnicity, ability, level of education, or economic background.

Signs

Some of the signs of an abusive relationship include a partner who:

• Is very jealous. They may control who you see, where you go, or what you do.
• Prevents you from making your own decisions like working or attending school.
• Tells you that you are a bad parent or threatens to harm or take away your children
• Destroys your property or threatens to hurt or kill your pets
• Intimidates you with guns, knives or other weapons (throwing objects, punching walls, kicking doors, etc.)
• Pressures you to have sex when you don’t want to or do things sexually you’re not comfortable with
• Preventing you from viewing or having access to bank accounts (Keeping your paycheck and denying you access)
• Refusing to give you money to pay for necessities/shared expenses like food, clothing, transportation, or medical care and medicine

S.A.V.E.

SAVE (Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments) is the domestic violence agency in the Tri-City Area. SAVE provides a range of services to people experiencing abuse by a partner. SAVE Advocates work with the police department but are not police officers. They work directly to support survivors with the Police Officers to provide complete support.

To speak to an advocate about services such as:

• Help filling out a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO)
• Court Accompaniment
• Help with emergency shelter, counseling, food and clothing and more
