Hayward COVID-19 Testing Center

On March 23, 2020 Hayward Fire Department (HFD) established the nation’s first free, city-mobilized COVID-19 drive-up testing site – just 12 days after declaration of a local emergency over the emerging global pandemic.

HFD worked diligently to partner with Hayward Police Department and several community organizations, including United Ambulance, Chabot College, and Global Support and Development and nonprofit La Familia, to support the testing site operationally.

Testing has not only been free, but available to anyone, age 12 or older, regardless of place of residence or immigration status, provided they met the health-condition criteria in place at the time. No physician referral has ever been required.

The COVID-19 Testing Center has been established to take pressure off hospital emergency rooms, provide quicker answers for recently exposed first responders and health care workers, and to enhance the region’s capacity to suppress new transmissions through isolation after testing. The Center is outfitted to test up to 500 people a day. It is free to the public and open to anyone regardless of where they live or immigration status.

Current location:

The COVID-19 Testing Center is now located at Skywest Golf Course at 1401 Golf Course Road adjacent to Hayward Executive Airport.

Lines to curb-side check-in and screening will be regulated to maintain safe distancing, traffic control, and to not exceed the maximum number of appointments taken per day.

Starting Aug. 3, as the COVID-19 Testing Center moves to Skywest Golf Course, people will now have to make an appointment. Please visit the Testing Center webpage on the City of Hayward website. Exceptions will be made for those that do not have a vehicle.

How it works:

To make an appointment, you must fill out the registration and insurance forms. You will need to provide a phone number and email address to log back into your account and view your results.  When you arrive at the testing site, please wait for one of our staff to check you into your appointment and begin screening and testing process, which includes a swabbing of the nasal cavities.

**Most test results will be available within three to five business days, depending on volume.

Hayward’s COVID-19 Testing Site is now collecting health insurance information. Please contact your insurance provider prior to scheduling an appointment to ensure your insurance policy will cover the cost of the test. If you do not have insurance, you will need to provide a driver’s license number, state ID number, or social security number for a free test.

Anthem Insurance considers the location of the lab when determining in-network testing. Our lab is located in Menlo Park and considered out of network for some Bay Area residents. Please check your policy for approved testing sites within your network to avoid a co-pay.

Who can get tested?

Anyone age 12 or older, regardless of place of residence or immigration status or whether or not they have COVID-19 symptoms.  No physician referral is required.

COVID-19 Testing Aftercare Instruction:
