Sign up to learn about the edible plants at your feet with UC Berkeley Professor Philip Stark on a tour of South Hayward. Did you know that wild and feral foods can improve nutrition, expand diets, excite palates, save water, reduce waste, increase food security, increase farm biodiversity, and increase farm revenue?

The Bay Area has about 90 common species of safe-to-eat vegetation, and we expect to spot at least 15 types of tasty greens on this tour. Please note: Picking or munching during the walk is discouraged. Sorry, no dogs.

Professor Stark is the founder and principal investigator of the Berkeley Open Food Source (https://forage.berkeley.edu/ ), which maps the availability and seasonal abundance of wild and feral edible plants, and much more. Stark is also an author of the BOFS field guide The Bay Area Baker’s Dozen of Wild Edibles, which will help you to forage for free and nutritious food in your own neighborhood. Find more information at the Berkeley Open Food Source website.

All ages are welcome; children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required - sign up now!.

The Hayward Seed Lending Library is a community seed exchange offered at both library locations. 'Check out' vegetable and flower seeds to plant in your garden. In return, harvest some of the seeds from mature plants for your own use and for sharing with the Seed Lending Library. It's easy to become a member or volunteer—learn more on our website or join the interactive forum on Facebook. Sponsored by the Friends of Hayward Library.
