Library Closure FAQ

The library will be closed until further notice. How will this affect you and how can you continue to access library services?

Librarians are available by phone Monday - Saturday from 11am - 1pm.  To speak with a librarian, please call 510-881-7980.  (Phone reference will be unavailable on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.)


General Questions
When will the library re-open?
At this time, it is unknown when we will re-open.  We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as soon as we have more information.
Do I need to return my books or movies?  
Please keep your items until we reopen. We will not charge any late fees during the closure.  For safety reasons, the book drops have been locked.  
When will my books or movie be due? Will I be charged late fees?
All due dates have been extended, and you will not be charged late fees until the new due date.  Please see the chart below:

Can I pick up my held books or movies?
Unfortunately, we are unable to distribute any items during the "shelter in place" order. We will extend the period that all items remain on hold so that you have plenty of time to pick them up after we reopen. Please disregard the Pick-Up By Date listed in your holds notice.
Can I renew my library card?

Using the Library Online
Can I get a library card online?
Yes! You can apply at, and if you include your email address, we'll send you your new card number within 1 business day. As soon as you have that number, you can start using online resources. You can pick up your physical card once the library is open again.
Have a library card, but it's expired? Email and we'll fix that for you.
What online resources are available?
Using your library card you can:
  • Borrow and read e-books
  • Listen to audiobooks
  • Stream movies and TV
  • Take a class
  • Learn a language
  • ...and so much more!
