Library Closure FAQ

The library will be closed until further notice. How will this affect you and how can you continue to access library services?

Librarians are available by phone Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.  To speak with a librarian, please call (510) 881-7980.  

General Questions:

Q. When will the library re-open?

A. At this time, it is unknown when we will re-open.  Even though the library is closed, you can use our new HPL to Go service to check out books and media - check the FAQ for more information. We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as soon as we have more information.

Q. Do I need to return my books or movies?  

A. Items may be returned to the Downtown Hayward Library (888 C Street). Book drops at the Weekes Branch remain locked. 

Q. When will my books or movie be due? Will I be charged late fees?

A. Please check your library account to find the due dates for your items. You will not be charged late fees during the closure.  

Q. Can I pick up my held books or movies?

A. Yes! Use our new HPL to Go service to place holds and pick up your items.  

Q. Can I renew my library card?

A. Please write to us at to renew your card.

Using the Library Online:

Q. Can I get a library card online?

A. Yes! You can fill out the library card application online, and if you include your email address, we'll send you your new card number within 1 business day. As soon as you have that number, you can start using online resources. You can pick up your physical card once the library is open again.

Have a library card, but it's expired? Email and we'll fix that for you.

Q. What online resources are available?

A. Using your library card you can:

  • Borrow and read e-books

  • Listen to audiobooks

  • Stream movies and TV

  • Take a class

  • Learn a language

  • ...and so much more!

Q. How do I access the online resources?

A. See all the options on our Resources page. Please note: Overdue fines and other fees will not prevent you from using the online resources!
