Volunteering at the Library

Volunteers are one of our greatest resources at the Library, supporting and enhancing library services. Make a difference. Volunteer!

Current volunteer opportunities at the Library:

  • Friends of the Library - involves a variety of activities, principally book sales to raise funds for Library services, newsletter mailings, and promoting the Library in the community.
  • Literacy Plus Tutor - provide free, confidential, one-to-one literacy tutoring to English-speaking adults who read below 8th-grade level. Click here to Volunteer.
  • Senior Outreach Service - select and deliver library materials to the homebound Hayward residents, involving one to two hours every two to three weeks. Click here to Volunteer.
  • Student Friends - in the spring and summer, students in Grade 7 and up help with the Summer Reading Game or other library programs and projects. Click here to Volunteer.
  • Special Projects - include light clerical work, washing books, Reading Buddies program, special library service projects. Click here to Volunteer.
  • School-Related Community Service - volunteer hours needed for education-related community service credit are sometimes available at the library. You may be on a waiting list before you are called.  Volunteer hours for court-ordered community service credit are not available at the library. Click here to Volunteer.
readLiteracy Plus

Teach someone to read…Change a life! For any adult, in any language, literacy is key to independence, self-sufficiency and pride. A few hours a week can change someone’s life - and your life, too. New tutor orientation will be held on August 31 and again on September 13, 2010. The next FREE training class begins September 25, 2010. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
