Resolution by the Hayward City Council saluting California State University, Hayward on its Silver Anniverary
Keep the tradition alive!
On December 17, 1959, the State of California decided on Hayward as the site of its newest State College. The people of Hayward celebrated with a parade down "B" Street led by the Hayward Municipal Band and a glittering sign announcing

"Hayward Has A State College."

Civic and business leaders were elated that the five-year struggle was over. Now the focus could shift to building the College.

Thus began the many years of support by Hayward leaders and residents for the State University that bears its name -

California State University, Hayward.

From 1959 until the campus dedication in 1963, College classes were held at both Sunset High School and the original Hayward High School. City funds augmented State funds to make the infrastructure improvements needed for the new campus.

The City, the Daily Review and Hayward residents even campaigned for a name change that pinpointed the location of the College. On July 19, 1963, the Board of Trustees of the California State Colleges approved the new name as California State College at Hayward - or as it would be familiarly known - Cal State Hayward.

Hayward is known as the “Heart of the Bay” - conveniently accessible from any area of the region. “Hayward” is a city with a proud history that has included having a state university stamped with the Hayward name for over 40 years.

Hayward is a vibrant and growing city. It has an ethnically diverse community, a healthy business sector from biotechnology to light manufacturing, a revitalized and transit-oriented downtown, and a thriving housing market.

To delete "Hayward" from California State University, Hayward will dishonor and dismiss the contribution that the Hayward Community has and continues to make to the university, and to the many thousands who regard CSUH as their alma mater.
